Home insurance is a type of property insurance you can buy to cover your home or contents for loss or damage in events like storms, fire, and theft. The term ‘home insurance’ can refer to different cover types - building insurance, contents insurance, or combined building and contents insurance.
The age and location of your property are some things that can affect how much you can insure your building for. Other factors include who lives in the property, and how it’s used.
A Building Insurance policy covers your home’s structure, fittings, and surrounds like fences and sheds. It doesn’t cover things like carpets, floor rugs, or other belongings you’ve placed inside your home. Building insurance is usually popular for people that own their homes. Everyday Insurance offers a sum insured cover that covers your home (building) up to a selected amount.
Event | Example |
Fire | If there’s a bushfire where your property is located, or an unexpected explosion occurs |
Storm, rainwater, and flood | If lightning damaged part of your external house wall |
Earthquake, tsunami, or volcanic eruption | If the tiles on your roof fall off or your fence breaks as the result of an insured event |
Malicious damage | If someone vandalises and graffitis an external wall of your property |
Accidental glass breakage | If your child accidentally kicks a ball through your property’s window |
Escape of liquid | If a pipe unexpectedly bursts in your home |
Impact | If your property is damaged by a falling tree branch or power pole |

A contents insurance policy covers loss or damage for the belongings inside your home like furniture, some free-standing appliances (like fridges), or clothes. It doesn’t cover alarm systems, dishwashers, or things that are permanently attached to your building. Everyday Insurance offers a sum insured cover that covers your contents up to a selected amount.
